Illustrator and designer Tad Carpenter describes his work as being modern, with a bit of Saturday morning cartoons mixed in. He also cites Pixar, Maurice Sendak, and Richard Scarry as influences, so it makes sense that its the sort of stuff both children and adults can enjoy. Carpenters new exhibit, Mayhem, Mischief, and Monsters (through Sept. 20), features 11-by-14-inch silk-screen prints of zombies, robots, and octopi. What makes these small panels so awesome is that theyre modular; each only depicts a portion of a creature. Carpenter, based in Kansas City, Missouri, then encourages us to mix and match the prints to create our own ideal monster. So slap a handful of tentacles on that snarling zombie.
