Isaiah Kalebu did a great job convincing King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg that he’s loony enough not to deserve the death penalty for allegedly breaking into the home of two South Park women last year, raping and torturing them both and killing one. He’s failed, however, in convincing a psychiatrist that he’s crazy enough to avoid standing trial. In fact, the shrink says he’s faking half his symptoms. KOMO and KING 5 News reported the story on Tuesday, not long after the first of three days of hearings to determine Kalebu’s mental competency prior to trial. Dr. Margaret Dean was charged with making an initial diagnosis as to his legal level of crazy and testified:”With regards to competency since he showed no current objective signs of major mental illness of cognitive impairment that there was no barriers for him to assist his attorneys of defense.” Dean also said that Kalebu would seem to have amnesia during interviews and to claim that he didn’t understand the charges against him, only to “snap out of it” later, when he interacted with other patients at Western State Hospital, where he’s been since his arrest last year.He also apparently told a hospital staffer that “I know I’m not crazy. I just have to do my time here.”For now, that is indeed the case. But considering the seeming mountain of forensic evidence implying Kalebu’s guilt, it’s likely that, soon, he’ll be doing his time in gen-pop with the rest of the scumbags.
