![[Thursday, December 18] On their MySpace page, Seattle foursome Eastern Grip refer to their music simply as aEœmessed-up pop songs.aE What do they do to mess up the straightforward melodies they come up with? They poke, pull, twist, and pummel them with guitars that sometimes twang country-like, and other times crunch angularly in an early aE™90s indie-rock kinda way, and still other times feed back with vigor. Then they kinda bash them around with clattering rhythms, and sing and yelp in ways that will never get you onto American Idol. Other times, they hardly mess aE™em up at all aE“ like aEœBoots On,aE a classic slab of rollicking power-pop with a Pavement-ish edge that only has a little bit of weird noise in the choruses.. If you missed out as well, hereaE™s another chance to right the wrong and find out why the all-girl foursome has been hailed around town of late as one of the rawest, fiercest, and most sonically combative outfits SeattleaE™s garage-punk/metal underground has coughed up in some time. In the finest gutter tradition, Valkyries vocalist Stevie howls like there are sheetrock nails, two gallons of whiskey, and four packsaE™ worth of cigarette smoke lodged in her throat, while the rest of the band rips it up like the unholy spawn of MotA¶rhead and L7. The group sounds terrifying, too, playing black metal that hisses maliciously through speaker holes like a poisonous mist. The cover of the recently re-released album Into The Black Forest of Witchery, on which a withered crane with sharpened-claw nails holds a crying infant over a smoking cauldron, doesnaE™t help these guysaE™ babysitter credentials. But by headlining this all-ages benefit for PROTECT, an organization that helps abused children, the band invites reevaluation. ![[Tuesday, December 23] Breaker! Breaker! is easily one of the best trucker movies ever released. Why? 1. It stars Chuck Norris. 2. Its tagline is aEœA town without justice. A hero without fear.aE 3. Chuck, naturally enough, takes on crooked cops and judges with his fists and feet and as always, kicks MAJOR ASS! Which brings us to two-girl, two-boy Breaker Breaker, easily one of SeattleaE™s best up-and-coming bands. Why? 1. All four members are way sexier than Chuck Norris, especially singer-guitarist Ashleigh Estes and keyboardist Emily Stockman. 2. If they had a tagline, it would be aEœA town without enough good New Wave-y punk-pop. A band without fear (of lugging its gear around for fifty bucks a gig). 3. Breaker Breaker, naturally enough, takes on the responsibility of rocking you with their spiky, steamy, dance-y grooves, thereby kicking MAJOR ASS! With I Can Make You On Fire, the Black Swedes.
