Okinawa Teriyaki

When was the last time someone told you your ramen smelled good? For that matter, when was the last time anyone bothered to say anything to you about ramen? Those only familiar with the six-to-a-dollar packaged instant noodle dish will be floored by the fragrant meal offered by this not exactly eye-catching joint. Though the deep-fried chicken katsu ($5.39) is pretty pleasing, it’s the hearty chicken ramen ($5.49, also available in beef for the same price, or shrimp for $5.99) that makes this unadorned lunch destination really stand out. A rich broth packed with thick noodles (forget about those skimpy Nissin strings) comes piled with an ample helping of teriyaki chicken and vegetables topped by an egg that seems to bring the whole thing together. It’s a great meal for any day when you’re under the weather—there’s a lot to eat without it being too heavy, and it feels revivifying (if you want more, the place is usually very generous about providing rice on the side, which soaks deliciously in any extra broth). The dish takes a little bit longer to prepare than the quick service that accompanies the rest of the menu, but it’s worth the wait. 1022 Alaskan Way, 206-447-2648. DOWNTOWN/WEST EDGE
