With UW set to honor Brandon Roy and his jersey at Hec Ed tonight, the editors of the emeritus Buzzer Beater blog have deemed it appropriate to devote one and only one post to another great guard of Husky past. And that guard is Senque Carey.After a promising first year (’98-’99) in which he was named to the Pac-10’s all-freshman team, Carey, a 6’4″ 210 lb. point guard, averaged 10.4 points and 4.6 assists in his sophomore campaign. But before his junior year, he announced he was transferring to be closer to his hometown of East Palo Alto, Calif. He ended up transferring to the University of New Mexico, which is 1,063 miles from East Palo Alto. Seattle, mind you, is but 833 miles from East Palo Alto. Carey obviously fibbed, and karma nabbed him in the form of a career-ending spinal injury in his senior year. Had he stayed at UW, he might have been paired in the Husky backcourt with one Brandon Roy.Today, Carey is an assistant coach at Fresno State, which is located approximately 168 miles from East Palo Alto. Senque Carey, ladies and gentlemen, is finally close to home.
