Photo by Leslie KellyGet it while it’s still hot at Roy’s. Owner Shane O’Neil’s taking some time off to travel and think about his future.I made the trip to Columbia City yesterday, my palate primed for a Carolina Gold sandwich at Roy’s BBQ. But the place was closed. Not closed for good, as it will be after Saturday, the victim of a bad economy and a burned-out owner.Shane O’Neil was inside getting ready for the final days. Since the news broke last week, hungry hordes have descended on the tiny shop, which O’Neil has been operating since 2005. “We sold out by two last week,” he said. “We ran out of food.”Did the rush of customers give him second thoughts about calling it quits?”No, not at all,” O’Neil said. “I guess I could be like those carpet places that are always going out of business, but I’m tired. I need a break.”Somebody buy that man a beer! Before pulling the plug, O’Neil will keep Roy’s open today through Saturday. But if you’re planning to go, better call first (723-7697), because when the food’s gone, it’s lights out. This might be totally obvious, but I’ve got to say it: Please don’t wait for your favorite restaurant to send up an SOS before you show up. Get out there and eat!
