Jonathan Gold, restaurant critic for the LA Weekly, has just been awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in the criticism category. He is the first restaurant critic to win a Pulitzer, and if my search of the Pulitzer databases was accurate, the first to even make the finals (the New York Times’ Frank Bruni was named a finalist in 1992, but for non-food-related news reporting).I’m a huge fan of Gold’s, not just because he eats fearlessly and broadly, but because he writes some of the most vivid, witty prose about food being published. Every year, he’s a shoe-in for just about any food writing award they dole out, but it’s nice to see literary-journalism circles show him such respect.
