Garage A Trois, featuring Skerik, second from left.Garage A Trois, Power Patriot: More than any other Skerik record in recent memory — and he is prolific dude — Power Patriot brings the violent saxophonist’s shenanigans down to a level more folks can access. The man has been known to produce sounds from his horn that reasonable ears would swear came from anything other than a saxophone. But on tunes like Patriot’s “Fragile,” Skerik sneaks in beautiful, unmistakable melodies alongside familiar accouterments like odd time signatures, heavy-handed drums with time kept on every piece of the kit, and a thin veil of distortion. (The band plays The Tractor on December 8.)We All Have Hooks for Hands, The Shape of Energy: This is a dusty, riffy group of dudes from South Dakota. They leave their guitars bright, and use all six strings to make more than a bed for heavily burdened lyrics. Lead singer Eli Show’s screeching howl sounds as much like Ben Bridwell as Owl City sounds like Ben Gibbard. It’s the most unfortunate band name since Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, but if you favor your indie rock with just a hint of Americana that doesn’t give way to alt-country, well, eat your heart out.
