This year, California goth folkie Chelsea Wolfe released Unknown Rooms, an acoustic

This year, California goth folkie Chelsea Wolfe released Unknown Rooms, an acoustic album that stripped away a touch (a touch) of the terror from her eponymous band’s 2011 full-length Apokalypsis, and left her sounding somber and introspective, but never frail. As a whole, the singer/songwriter’s catalog is all dusty guitar strings and creaky floorboards, and when she breaks into a rocker like “Demons” or “Pale on Pale,” it sounds like she’s been sucked into the basement by the family poltergeist. Her music can come off a bit creepy, but in the best kind of way. Plus, isn’t it more fun to see a live show with at least a mild fear factor? With King Dude. TODD HAMM
