Stay Together, Carry a Gun, Protect the Hill: The area being patrolled is one of the nastiest places in this city and the cops won't do squat about it. I've seen drug deals in the parking lot of the gnarly apartment building north of the Charlemange (this one has no name - just a no-trespassing sign) at 7:30 a.m. when moms are walking their kids to the bus stop. I've stepped over syringes on sidewalks just steps away from where a homeowner or renter was pulling weeds in his yard and pointed it out to him in case he wasn't wearing gloves. I'm bothered by crime in this neighborhood, but when I voiced this concern on another Beacon Hill blog on a post which dealt with crime rates in our area, another poster accused me of being a white yuppie (not either) and racist. So, thanks for doing this article so that I could get this off my chest. I'm sure I'll get called a white yuppie (OK, I'll take the white-yuppie paycheck if you're offering). And as I posted before, I don't see how being concerned about the safety of your neighborhood has to do with what race or tax bracket you're in. And the lead singer felt the need to continually remind us of what a completely hack jackass he is with cliche rockstar phrasing between numbers followed by his incessant Ric Flair 'Wooo.' Can't Keep Them Down on the Farm: Ironic to see this headline after an encounter I had on my bicycle trip through the Cascades this past weekend. I took a photo of the Dino Rossi for Governor sign by the road 15 miles from Wenatchee. The bottom of the sign says, Don't let Seattle steal this election. I couldn't believe it. My knee-jerk reaction was, are you kidding me? You're worried that the citizens of Seattle who share the same State might vote to try to democratically elect someone-- and this is 'stealing'? Anyway, it was a stark reminder of the urban/rural wedge, (and the way the Rossi campaign is trying to drive that wedge deeper to rally rural voters). From my experience & ideals, us vs. them is at the heart of most local and global problems. Harassing Gas: So essentially then, Mr. Badgley agrees with Propel and with Imperium in a critical area... no reputable biofuel producer or retailer wants to be in the business of turning food into fuel for the long term. Why? Because they won't make money! The traditional supply chain for veg oil and corn is owned by a couple firms (not too different from big oil). The second generation approach, if executed successfully, is the one that would solve the problem in a vastly scaleable way, yielding big bucks for whoever could figure it out and own that disruptive supply chain. This is a disagreement over means, not ends. The difference between One Earth and the remaining pro-biofuels people is a case of perfectionist utopians versus incrementalist pragmatists. Pure idealism is admirable, but in a complicated world where no single entity can feasibly have all the answers, incrementalism leads to experimentation, learning, and eventual results (or failure and obscurity). I even bought a Flobots poster at Flatstock, just in the small hope that they would sign it. Did I get in?
