The Dead and The Allman Brothers Band played The Gorge on May

Even thirsty dogs.
1/39
Even thirsty dogs.
Even thirsty dogs.
And, of course, plenty of music.
In the main event, Bob Weir led the band through staples like Hell in a Bucket and One More Saturday Night.
Phil Lesh kept up on bass/spaceship.
Warren Haynes pulled double duty, playing with The Dead as well as The Allman Brothers.
Missing from the stage, obviously, was the late Jerry Garcia, who managed to make several appearances throughout the weekend. Here, Raul Chavez shows me prints from his first Dead show in L.A. in 1967.
Lesh checks out the teleprompter. It's not just the Dead, y'all. Everyone -- from Brian Wilson to Paul McCartney -- uses these things.
Weir and Haynes
Ha!
Back at the campground's mall/barter fair/food court, there was something for everyone.
The campground was full of kids getting an early Dead fix.
This woman was selling soap.
But, I'm pretty sure this guy used Irish Spring. (Insert joke about hippies not bathing here.)
A common sentiment.
It wasn't hard to find a tie-dye.
This guy was selling one of the more creative items in the mall.
Check out his gun-shaped pipe.

Back at the campgrounds, Nick Haas, 21, gives me a quick tour of his bus.
And from all sorts.
Everyone was looking for a miracle to get into the sold-out show.
Good luck, pal.
To open The Allman Brothers Band's set, Derek Trucks led the band through a 20-plus minute rendition of Mountain Jam.
Trucks explains to Warren Haynes that if he didn't wear a watch, Ain't Wasting Time No More, would never end.
Greg Allman, behind the organ.
The remaining Allman brother.
Bassist Oteil Burbridge.
Warren Haynes, left, and drummer Butch Trucks.
Before the show, there were plenty of pleas for tickets.
He's had it since he was 14.
He and a friend back home in the Newport, Ore., area did all the artwork themselves.
Their neighbor's got a few more miles.
And nothing says The Dead like a Cadillac Escalade.
OK, maybe a Hummer takes the cake.
Happy couple.
Another happy couple.
One satisfied customer.
