From where I was standing it was unclear what provoked officers to use the spray. This picture shows he first use of the spray on the protestors. My best guess was that several protestors tried to cross the makeshift police line in a way that made the officers feel threatened.

I personally was pushed, shoved, spit on, tripped, and almost had my camera stolen. On several occasions protesters threatened me with physical harm despite the heavy police presence.

An officer prepares for crowd control after an unrelated incident causes a stir in an ally on Capitol Hill. Allegedly someone had been thrown out of a nightclub for urinating on someone else. In the same location protesters were disbanding. This incident became of interest to some of the protesters, so the club's security called the police to help control the situation.

Many protesters were outwardly aggressive to the press. Calling them snitches, blocking cameras with flags, threatening violence, attempting to steal equipment, and even threatening to use their flag poles as weapons.
