[Thursday, August 14] According to their Myspace information, Sugar and Hate says that their sound is much like a baboon forcing sexual acts upon loved ones, but unless the baboon is on an opiate, it doesn't fit. Sugar and Hate may be too drowsy to introduce the herky-jerky band that follows, Suburban Korner Kick, who, as their MySpace states: Sounds like music. The sound of Sugar and Hate would set the tone for Pablo Trucker, who play more of a melodic vocal blues. Pablo Trucker channels a Counting Crows-type vibe, but harness it into more of a minimalist/ Americana/ Rock. Or at least that is what their MySpace says. High Dive, 513 N. 36th, 632-0212. 9 p.m., $6. Listen to Pablo TruckeraE™sLooking for a Good Time.
[Thursday, August 14] Most Methfests last two and a half weeks and leave all involved with severe dental damage, skulking around the streets while panhandling. This Methfest, however, is not a drug binge, but a collection of bands that provide the perfect soundtrack to inhaling noxious chemicals into your lungs. JewelBox/Rendezvous: 2322 Second Ave., 441-5823. 10:30 p.m., $5.
[Friday, August 15] Because she hasnaE™t had a chart-topping hit or album in a long time, some people tend to forget just how mega-popular Pat Benatar once was (sheaE™s sold umpteen millions of albums), or overlook how influential and empowering sheaE™s been for female musiciansaE“ you can (and should) put her up there with the likes of Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, and Kathleen Hanna in that regard. But setting aside the commercial and social aspects of her career, BenataraE™s music simply kicks ass, and her songwriting absolutely stands the test of time. Emerald Queen Casino, 2102 Alexander, 253-594-7777. 8:30 p.m., $35-$65. Listen to Love is a Battlefield.
[Friday, August 15] Just because Triumph of Lethargy Skinned Alive To Death contains ex-Murder City Devils Spencer Moody and Dann Gallucci doesn't mean you should expect the same species of noisy punk rock made for blackening someone's eye with a flailing limb. No, this project is mostly trippy static, a touch of twang (is that why there are almost always several pairs of cowboy boots for sale at Anne Bonny? Not that I'm criticizing...), tipsy vocals and the occasional screamer reminiscent of days gone by. King Cobra, 916 E. Pike St. 8 p.m. Listen to CanaE™t Kiss Huggy Bear.
[Friday, August 15 and Saturday, August 16] The last time I saw Tom Petty at the Gorge, I took a bunch of mushrooms. The success of my trip pretty much hinged on whether or not he played aEœDonaE™t Come Around Here No More,aE which he did. Hence, Petty is one of my two aEœsafeaE acts for psychedelics, the other being, of course, the Allman Brothers Band. Suffice it to say, I wonaE™t be taking drugs before either of the Petty-Winwood shows this weekend, unless tequila counts as a drug. Gorge Amphitheatre, 754 Silica Rd. N.W., Quincy, 628-0888 8 p.m., $45-$95. All ages. Listen to Don't Come Around Here No More.
[Saturday, August 16] Need something to do in between weekends of seeing ZZ Top and Tony HawkaE™s Boom Boom HuckJam? Sandwiched in the middle of those two drastically different concerts is another unusual bill. Headlining the showcase is Redbone, an act that gained commercial success in 1974 for the song Come And Get Your Love. This showcase should be perfect for those who still pine at the chance to see Stevie Ray on stage, mingled betwixt long dormant soul acts. White River Amphiteatre, 40601 Auburn-Enumclaw Rd., Auburn. 6 p.m., $10-$40. Listen to Come and Get Your Love.
[Tuesday, August 19] IaE™m glad that Backdoor Slam got postponed because that means I get another chance to go see Hazelwood Motel, whose three proprietors croon melancholy, wispy folk dirges born of a haunted psyche. Of course, I expect nothing less from Mark PickerelaE™s sister and company, and if Hazelwood Motel does wind up on the fast track to fame and fortune, I wouldnaE™t bat an eyelash. With the Purrs, Noel Lacey. Tractor Tavern, 5213 Ballard Ave. N.W., 789-3599. 9 p.m., $6. Listen to Break Myself in Two.
[Tuesday, August 19] In past Short Lists, I've lamented my terrible early teen taste, and tonight's show at the El Corazon featuring Faster Pussycat is pretty much my eighth grade record collection throwing up all over itself, much like I did in junior high after consuming an entire bottle of Strawberry Hill Boone's Farm. With Bang Tango, the Dogs Divine, Zero Down, DJ Sammi Curr. El Corazon, 109 Eastlake Ave. E., 381-3094. 8 p.m., $20 adv, $25 dos. All ages. Listen to Bathroom Wall.
[Tuesday, August 19] A certain amount of respect should automatically be awarded to any Portland band that possess the huevos to use the all-encompassing blanket phrase folk-rock as a self-descriptor AND adorns the cover of their debut album with hand-drawn rainbows. It's only after acknowledging this fact that one can truly appreciate the soaring, solid genius of duo Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski's Blind Pilot. With Sonic Smith, Randy B. Blue Moon Tavern, 712 N.E. 45th St., 675-9116. 9 p.m. Free. Listen to Go On Say It.
