Eastern Washington would like money from its fans so that it may give them a permanent migraine.Perhaps sensing that there’s something very sad about being outperformed by schools from neighboring Idaho, a Washington football program is looking to steal some of Boise State’s thunder. Not only do the Broncos have arguably the best team in the nation, they also have a blue field, affectionately known as “Smurf Turf.” Enter I-AA Eastern Washington, which just announced plans to install a red field.”There is no doubt that one of Boise State’s claims to fame has been their blue turf and like it or dislike it, it has certainly brought them a tremendous amount of notoriety,” says EWU athletic director Bill Chaves. “In a similar vein we have a tremendous opportunity at Eastern to do the same by differentiating ourselves with the red turf while providing a superior playing surface.”What are the odds EWU’s President dared Chaves to say “vein” when announcing the schools plans to dye the football field blood red?
