Local jazz club Tula’s has announced that in February, they’re reducing their open jam schedule from once a week to twice a month. It’s a move that’s not surprising considering A) the economy, and B) the downturn in support for jazz in recent years.According to a story that ran in the Seattle Times yesterday, bar owner Mack Waldron, says the decision was purely financial and that he hopes things turn around in the near future. I visited the club for the first time last Friday night by accident and really dig the place. I was trying to get to a bar down the street but parked in front of Tula’s. Since a good friend of mine, who is Filipina, just named her daughter Tula, I decided to step inside. The bar was practically dead –which was a sad sight on a Friday — but the music was good. It sounds like Tula’s is hurting for support so if anyone out there considers themselves to be “a jazz supporter,” feel free to get off your rump and spend some money inside of this joint. The place is all ages until 10 p.m. and the $8 cover charge is affordable. I’ve only been there once but any time a jazz venue closes down, a piece of American music history dies with it. The phone number for Tula’s is 206 443-4221 and all show info can be found on their website by clicking here.
