It’s swing season for Northwest climbers: Rain, fall weather, and short days mean that most routes are being done close to the car bumper at Index or Vantage, and it’ll be months before snow and ice open up the classic winter lines in the Cascades. In the meantime, there are the indoor plastic handholds at Stone Gardens and Vertical World. And, for one night only, the traveling Reel Rock Film Tour, which offers various short adventure flicks featuring some big names from the granite realm. Dean Potter, Steph Davis, Tommy Caldwell, and Lisa Rands are among the iron-fingered athletes filmed in locales ranging from the Grand Canyon to South Africa. You may not be able to cling to the same 5.12 holds or fit into their tiny rock slippers, but think of all the inspiration they’ll provide at your next session in the gym.
