Shaun Kardinal

We all have some odd guilty pleasure in the bathroom—the hygiene habit we don’t tell anyone about. Mine is brushing my teeth naked while drip-drying after my shower and contemplating my upcoming day. Shaun Kardinal likes to take photos of himself in all his bathrobe-less glory. The results are on display in the “Photographer’s Showcase” exhibition (through Aug. 30), which also features five other photographers’ non-lavatory-related work. Kardinal documents himself showering, shaving, and brushing his teeth—moments, he says, that we take for granted while we let our minds wander. Dramatically posing under the stark bathroom light, Kardinal captures the brooding heaviness of those unguarded, unobserved moments. With their foreboding shadows and bloody shaving cuts, his shots might creep you out, too. Unless your restroom routine is even stranger.
