Macaroni and cheese, Shepherd’s pie, fettucine alfredo, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, crème brulee: all stuff I want to stuff my face with in the wintertime, for obvious reasons. But nothing assuages those compulsive desires better than staying busy in the darker months, even if just for a couple extra hours per week. Taking a class is an easy way to do that, and aspiring foodies should know that signing up for the Argentine tango isn’t the only route. The local Bon Vivant School of Cooking hosts ongoing multi-week courses, like “Mastering the Basics,” which begins today, as well as one-offs like “Pasta, Polenta, Gnocchi, and Risotto” (January 14) and “Five Minute Sauce Magic” (January 16). Things you’ll learn in “Basics” include getting confident with kitchen processes and gadgets and figuring out the best places to get ingredients for a variety of courses. So, why not get comfortable and learn something? You can worry about those extra five pounds in May. http://bon-vivant.com. “Basics” runs Thursdays through March 13. $39 (single class)-$550 (full membership for series’ classes). 7 p.m.
