Arab Food & Culture, and a Hookah Bar

The Arab Center of Washington hosts its biannual Arab Festival with a plethora of traditional Arabic treats that may remind us that the Arab world is not so far away–at least, culinarily speaking. On the menu: chicken shewarma, beef kabab, and makhloubeh (spiced chicken, rice, pine nuts and fried cauliflower). Beverages include super-strong Arabic coffee and sweet mint tea. For dessert, that familiar favorite, baklava, as well as kanafe pastry with mild white cheese and rosewater syrup. While you sip and munch, wander around the souk (Arab market) and take in some traditional dance and music, as well as a fashion show. A water pipe “with flavors like strawberry” is also available, the flavors being that of the tobacco that you might puff through this pipe. If you decide to indulge in a communal smoke with the hookah, know that this social pastime has been popular for centuries in the Mid-East.
