MacCool’s Gets By With Tight Jeans, Flip-Flops, and Trivia

Finn MacCool’s looks like it was hit with a car bomb full of Irish souvenirs. Nearly every inch of free wall space is covered with framed “My Goodness My Guinness” posters, signs denoting “Parking for Leprechauns Only,” and anything and everything touting Irish whiskey. As one of University Avenue’s primary stops on the coed night train, in the evening hours MacCool’s sees high volumes of sorority girls teetering around in tight jeans and spike heels and guys in flip-flops (no matter what the weather) hovering around them—distracted only by the constant stream of sports being broadcast over the many big screens. MacCool’s makes it worth their while to stop in for a drink pretty much every night of the week—they’ve got an always-packed trivia night (Tuesdays), karaoke (Thursdays), live local music (Saturdays), and specials that range from $3 wells to 50 percent off everything on the menu (both food and drink) on Sundays. You won’t find any Irish soda bread; they do offer Guinness beef stew; and the Blarney Stone burrito, while perhaps not so authentic, definitely has what it takes to ease the repercussions of heavy drinking. Not that the Irish would know anything about that.
