Dick's Drive-In Eliminated From Burger Battle

Dick's was the first powerhouse to fall in our Burger Battle, losing to Capitol Hill upstart 8 Oz. Burger Bar in the first round of tournament play. Reader votes also ruled out most of the fanciest burgers in the competition, including entries from RN74, Tavern Law, La Bete and Marjorie. Ma'Ono and Met Grill - which offers a $7 burger during happy hour - are the last of the upscale patty producers left standing.

Although there were thousands of votes cast in the contest, the vast majority of match-ups were startlingly close: Katsu squeaked past Loretta's Northwesterner by a mere 10 votes. Easily the most lopsided match involved Burger Madness and Blue Moon Burgers, which claimed 90 percent of the vote. Burger Madness, which stacks a dozen patties on its signature sandwich, apparently doesn't apply its "go big" philosophy to campaigning.

Tom Douglas fared well in the tournament's first round: Palace Kitchen proceeds to square off with Katsu, and Brave Horse Tavern advances to face 8 Oz. So did Scott Staples, who watched Uneeda Burger and Quinn's Pub continue their march toward the finals.

The Dick's corner was acknowledged as the hottest bracket section in the first round, but there's now an internecine fight brewing in West Seattle, where neighbors Jak's Grill and Ma'Ono are locked in a struggle for burger supremacy.

And, speaking of burgers to the west: Zippy's fans, who are apparently as lunkheaded as they are loyal, will note that their favorite joint is still not included in the bracket. That's because -- as explained in the overview post and in the comments section of almost every post thereafter -- this competition is limited to in-city contenders. But because we here at Voracious aim to please, our final blind tasting will include Zippy's burgers alongside the top four finalists. Zippy's isn't eligible to win, place or show, but we'll share the results for comparison purposes.

Use this weekend to study the updated bracket. Eat burgers. Evaluate juiciness. Analyze buns. Because the fun restarts on Monday morning, with the first match-up in the Battle's second round. Don't forget to vote.
