California Avenue is about to score another spot for fried chicken. The West Seattle Blog reports that Harry's Chicken Joint is getting ready to open in the former Meander's space at 6032 California Ave. SW.
Harry's poultry will be brined in buttermilk for a day, smoked on apple wood, and fried in an iron skillet. You can get a taste soon: Within the next week or so, the owners are planning to offer take-out chicken for customers at the nearby Beveridge Place Pub. Harry's drumsticks, duck fat-roasted taters, and greens will be available at the restaurant proper by the first of March. Follow progress over on Harry's Facebook page.
In other news, after a several years-long hiatus, chef Ethan Stowell is re-introducing his Cook-Offs for Charity fundraisers. Chili is the theme of the first cook-off of 2013. Scheduled for Sunday, February 24, at 6 p.m., pro competitors, including Manny Arce of Poquitos and Dan Braun of Oliver's Twist, will go head-to-head with home cooks in a chili showdown inside Tavolata at 2323 2nd Ave. Armed with a scorecard and spoon, guests will taste and rank each pot throughout the evening and choose the winner. $50 bucks gets you in the door and includes garlic bread, salad, tap beer, and a lot of beans. All proceeds benefit the Fetal Hope Foundation. The event is expected to sell out, so call 206-838-8008 for reservations.
