It's already been two years since chef Maria Hines opened the doors of Golden Beetle, her Eastern Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in Ballard. To celebrate, the eatery at 1744 NW Market St. is extending its happy hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. this evening. Bites priced at $5 include Skagit River Ranch burgers and wood-fired flat bread. Hines has had a busy last several years. The James Beard Award winner opened her first restaurant Tilth in Wallingford in 2006 and launched Fremont's Agrodolce last December.
In other news, dough tossers from pizza shops around town, including Piecora's, Big Mario's, and Elemental, will gather at Ballard Pizza Company March 10 to compete for the coveted title of Pizza Toss Boss 2013. Participants will be judged on toss height, style, speed, and pie appearance. A suggested donation of $20 will get you a scorecard, salad and pizza. "Toss Like a Boss" gets going at 5107 Ballard Ave. NW at noon, with proceeds benefiting a charity picked by the day's big winner.
