There's a small army of Vancouver-based restaurants that justify the drive, but trekking north solely to eat Meeru Dhalwala's inventive Indian fare is no longer one of them. Seattle Met reports that Dhalwala and business partner O?uz Istif's Shanik opens this week at 500 Terry Ave. in South Lake Union. Note: Puget Sound Business Journal staff reported via Twitter Sunday that Shanik's planned Monday opening has been pushed back a few days, so call first.
In the meantime, get ready for the likes of rapini and shitake mushroom curry and spice encrusted lamb popsicles. Almost half of Shanik's menu items will be meatless. Like Dhalwala (and husband Vikram Vij's) wildly popular restaurants Vij's and Rangoli in Vancouver, Shanik doesn't take reservations. There's every indication that the food will be more than worth the wait.
A neighborhood favorite, Thai restaurant Thaiku operated in Ballard for almost a decade before shuttering last December after a property dispute. Ballard's loss is Phinney Ridge's gain. Thaiku is reopening in a to-be-disclosed location in Phinney early next year. Several kitchen and floor staff from the original restaurant will be making the move.
