Loaded Soda: Does This Pot Pop Live Up To Its Name?

Loaded Sodas of several different flavors were available; each was named cleverly to let you know it was a cannabinated knock-off of a major soda. I chose Mountain Dank, which did, indeed, taste a lot like Mountain Dew... with a nice addition of the subtle essence of marijuana.

Over the past couple of years, I've tried around a dozen varieties of marijuana-infused sodas as I've explored the offerings at medicinal cannabis access points around Puget Sound. But when I visited Tacoma Cross on a recent weekend, I saw one I hadn't tried yet, and with a great name: Loaded Soda. "Medicated Elixir Hand Crafted in Olympia," the bottom of the front label informs us. Of course I had to give it a try; would it live up to its name, and be worth the $10 donation?

Loaded Sodas of several different flavors were available; each was named cleverly to let you know it was a cannabinated knock-off of a major soda. I chose Mountain Dank, which did, indeed, taste a lot like Mountain Dew... with a nice addition of the subtle essence of marijuana.

But the amount of marijuana is important. An examination of the Loaded Soda label reveals that each 12 ounces contains 15.66 milligrams of delta-9 THC, the main psychoactive component of cannabis; according to the ingredients, this comes from "THC concentrate," which I'm guessing means some form of hash oil.

In a welcome innovation, the CBD content is also listed (1.04 mg per 12 ounces). CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the most medically promising compounds in marijuana, having shown anti-inflammatory and anti-pain properties in scientific tests.

Now, if you're an average guy or gal with an average tolerance to marijuana, 15 milligrams of THC can be an effective dose; for patients who must take large amounts of cannabis every day, it can be hardly noticeable. I fall into the latter category, which means that to cop an actual buzz from Loaded Soda I'd have to guzzle two or more bottles. That could add up pretty quickly at $10 a pop.

You can find Loaded Soda at access points; I found mine at Tacoma Cross, 1126 Commerce Street in Tacoma.
