Costas Opa, the longstanding Greek restaurant at the corner of N 34th & Fremont Ave N., has closed. Fremocentrist reports that the space was sold to Chase and will be converted into a branch bank.
After more than two decades at 601 Pine St., Von's Roasthouse & Manhattan Memorial is changing its name to Von's 1000SPIRITS GustoBistro and moving to a new location on Harbor Steps at 1225 1st Ave.
"We felt like after 25 years at the same location, Von's needed a change," says Vice President of Operations Merrisa Firnstahl-Claridge. Von's current incarnation (the restaurant traces its roots to 1904) was started by Firnstahl-Claridge's father, who operated waterfront eateries, including Leschi Lake Cafe, Kirkland Roaster and Ale House and Kenmore Roaster. "We felt like we were carrying on the tradition with moving Von's to Harbor Steps and think it is a better location with all the new opportunities with the waterfront."
The updated menu will feature burgers made using beef chopped in-house and frics, sourdough "French country" pizzas inspired a 50-year-old starter from the family of Von's executive chef. "We took their starter and developed a sourdough crust which we top with flavor-forward ingredients and then fire over diamond coal," Firnstahl-Claridge explains.
Von's last day at its current location is January 31. Von's 1000SPIRITS GustoBistro is slated to open February 15, 2013.
