The Fare: Savory and sweet handmade pies

The Stop: A new food truck specializing in 5-inch handmade pies hit the 2nd/Pike Food Truck Pod last week and struck big by selling out of almost all their pies by noon. The truck's name is a nod to pi, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.

These are not your run-of-the-mill Betty Crocker apple pies, and the two dudes behind 314 Pie are not your everyday dudes.

Mini savory pies are commonly seen all across New Zealand and Australia and serve as the quintessential budget backpacker's lunch. With the optimal ratio of carbs, fat, and protein, the little guys keep a hiker's energy up as they high-five koalas.

As an avid traveler who has even worked in Antarctica, co-owner Deke Kotrla first came across this savory genre of pies in New Zealand. Casey Cooper is a baker who went to culinary school and has worked in the pastry kitchens of Seattle restaurants such as Julia's in Wallingford and Tom Douglas restaurants.

I scan the menu and go for the steak and onion, partially because it was my go-to pie when I was traveling through Lord of the Rings land and also because they were sold out of my first choice, the lamb, potato and rosemary. The flavor of the steak and onion is so tremendous I would order it at a fancy white tablecloth restaurant. The meat could have been slightly more tender, but I hardly notice as the filling is overshadowed by the brilliance of the crust.

Fillings can be finessed, but what separates an average pie shop from one that is dope is the crust. And through my month of trekking through New Zealand and consuming at least one pie a day, Cooper and Kotrla's crust trumps all of them.

They hand-make their pies daily from scratch and the butter crust has the right amount of crust and flake, and it is pretty too.

The high energy pie-slingin' duo is big into experimenting with flavor combinations so expect some fun varieties to be thrown into the mix. At a pop-up at Skelly and the Bean a few months ago, the 314'ers served up a pork and peach pie, a minestrone pie, and a veggie coconut curry pie.

Be on the lookout for a mac and cheese with pancetta and a holiday goose pie. Yup, you read that right. They will be concocting a filling consisting of roasted goose with apples and walnuts to make your mom feel bad she just makes a blasé ham for the holidays.

Don't worry, vegetarians, 314 Pie does is not forsaking you. They are planning on subbing out the waterfowl for roasted pumpkin.
