The Snackdown tournament is only in its first week, but the bracket's already been shaken by what's likely to be the tournament's biggest upset: Defending champions White Center fell to the Southeast Super Region in first-round play.

Southeast Wins Big in First Snackdown Contest

Thousands of readers filed votes in the match-up, which wasn't even close: The Southeast captured a whopping 68 percent of the vote total. Although the Southeast had the undeniable advantage of being Super - the district comprises Central District, Madrona, Mt. Baker, Beacon Hill, Georgetown, Columbia City and Rainier Valley - White Center was paired with West Seattle, a culinary powerhouse which had a strong solo performance in last year's tournament. But voters deemed the west's tortas, almond croissants, fried chicken, crawfish and beer to be inferior to the foods they find down south.

The Southeast now advances to face the International District, owner of the first round's most commanding win: The ID vanquished Downtown by a 5 to 1 margin.

On the other end of the city side of the bracket, Capitol Hill easily rolled over Queen Anne/Magnolia. And while the contest between Ballard and Fremont/Wallingford was tighter, Ballard still managed to pick up 54 percent of the votes. Ballard will join with nearby Phinney and Greenwood (which we stupidly overlooked in our original bracket) to challenge the very confident Capitol Hill in the semi-finals.

Over in the suburbs, Bellevue and Redmond/Woodinville fought the first round's most white-knuckled battle, with Redmond/Woodinville emerging just barely victorious, collecting 50.79 percent of votes cast. Redmond/Woodinville now meets Kirkland/Bothell/Kenmore, which beat out Issaquah/North Bend/Snoqualmie. Other survivors of the suburban melee are Vashon/Bainbridge/Bremerton and Burien/Tukwila/Seatac/Federal Way/Des Moines.

Quarterfinals start Monday morning.
