Win a Dinner Party From Modernist Cuisine

Tens of thousands of curious cooks have purchased a copy of Modernist Cuisine, so you may have already sampled your friend's version of a striped omelet, or tried your hand at caramelized carrot soup. But the number of people who've eaten a meal created by the Modernist Cuisine team is awfully small: Few people have been invited to dine at the Bellevue lab, and tickets to infrequent public events are notoriously expensive.

So it's almost impossible to overstate the value of a prize package that the Modernist Cuisine lab has concocted especially for Voracious' college-aged readers. Our lucky contest winner will receive a copy of Modernist Cuisine at Home, the first Modernist cookbook for home cooks; a Polyscience Sous Vide Professional CREATIVE immersion circulator; a Polyscience Smoking Gun; an iSi Whipping Siphon -- here's where even those who've dined at the Modernist Cuisine lab are bound to get jealous -- the opportunity to cook alongside the Modernist Cuisine team.

Together, the winner and the Modernist Cuisiners will create a dorm room Modernist Cuisine dinner party for eight of the student's closest friends.

To faithfully reproduce all of the dishes featured in the six volumes of Nathan Myhrvold's groundbreaking Modernist Cuisine: The Art and Science of Cooking, a cook would need a centrifuge and a rotor-stator homogenizer. By contrast, the recipes in the 456-page cookbook set for release this October require only basic equipment. The Modernist Cuisine folks claim Modernist Cuisine at Home's recipes work even in the least-lavishly outfitted kitchen - a contention they're ready to test on campus.

So how do you win this stupendous prize? Create a video of a cooking show (starring you, of course) which shows why you need the Modernist Cuisine folks to help you throw a dinner party and upload it to YouTube with "mcvideocontest" as its tag.

The show should run no longer than two minutes, and must be filmed in your dorm room or kitchenless residence. Finally, your demonstration needs to include at least one of the following five ingredients: Ramen noodles, Sriracha, coffee, peanut butter or energy drink. Once you've uploaded your video, please send an e-mail to mcvideocontest@seattleweekly.com with your name, age, school, area of study and brief description of your living space. All entries must be received by 11:59 PM on October 26th, 2012.

The contest is open to individuals (age 18 or older) enrolled in the University of Washington, Seattle University, Seattle Pacific University, Evergreen State College or any other residential post-secondary institution between Tacoma and Everett (in the south and north) and North Bend and Seattle (in the east and west). Entrants must be available for the dinner party on a mutually-agreeable date in November, and willing to have the experience filmed.

Most importantly, only students who don't have access to a working kitchen are eligible. If you live in an apartment or an apartment-style dorm suite, you can't play. A hot plate, mini-fridge or microwave is fine. A sink, stove or centrifuge is not. If you're unsure whether you qualify, shoot us an e-mail at mcvideocontest@seattleweekly.com.

While Modernist techniques are extraordinarily precise, there's no specific formula for winning the dorm room dinner party. A panel of qualified judges will judge entries based on the following criteria: the most apt, original and interesting video; creative demonstration in your video of why you deserve to have the Modernist Cuisine chefs help you cook without a kitchen; unique presentation of video themes; overall quality of your video. Good luck!
