The Place: OutWest, 5401 California Ave. S.W., 937-1540, WEST SEATTLE
The Hours: Daily, 3pm - 7pm
The Digs: Located in a sleepy locale between the Alaska and Morgan Junctions, OutWest doesn't advertise for attention. It's as low key on the inside as it is outwardly; if not for the deep maroon paint job -- a shade that is nearly impossible not to associate with lesbian living rooms-- and occasional piece of promotional rainbow swag, this would pass as any other neighborhood haunt. The music comes via the Rihanna channel on Pandora, and early happy hour sees this place about half full of folks engaged in lively conversation.
The Deal: $1 off Beers on Tap, $3 wells, $4 house wines and discounted shots are available to get the party started.
The Verdict: Name aside, OutWest does not play into stereotypes and isn't at all interested in being edgy; it's the anti-Pony, if you will. Sports on the TV, $2 Bud Lights and a beyond casual vibe -- on a sunny day you will see almost every patron in flip-flops -- make for a nice place to hang with a crowd mature enough not to care about catering to clichés.
