The Place:Mashiko, 4725 California SW, 935.4339, WEST SEATTLE
The Hours: Sunday -Thursday, 5pm - 6pm
The Deal: With a minimum of one drink per person, you get access to a happy hour menu which offers reduced prices on a starter of the day ($2), sushi and sashimi ($6), small plates ($5), special drinks ($1 off) and dessert ($4).
The Digs: Small, clean and friendly, Mashiko has been the go-to joint for quality, sustainable sushi for years. The house PA was pumping out smooth jazz on my visit, and the wait staff are a helpful bunch. The giant fish tank that greets you at the door is a great time killer when you are holding out for a coveted seat. If you want to take advantage of HH, do so by making reservations, as the wait list for this place can be very long.
The Verdict: This happy hour -- albeit short -- gives you a chance to sample some of the best fish in Seattle offered at a fair price. The special Mashiko Jasmine Brew ($4 during happy hour) has to be my favorite beer in the city, and when paired with the Tuna on Snowshoes (tartar served on two tempura shiso leaves, $5) or the deep-fried-heaven which is the Chicken Katsu ($5), you can feel like you've gotten both your full and fancy on for a mere $10.
