Uptown, Downtown or Down Home: Down Home - way, way, Downtown. The Square Knot resides in the most punk rock pocket of Seattle: Georgetown. With its eclectic mix of residents and industrial but cozy feel reminiscent of parts of London - or Williamsburg before the great douche explosion of '02 - it serves as the perfect spot to take a kid named Strummer for pancakes.

Bubbles, Bloodies or Black Coffee: The house bubbles are Cooks, so have at it if you choose. The full-service bar will provide you with Bloodies and there is a quaint lil' brunch cocktail menu. The highlight of my drinking experience at TSKD would have to be my first taste of Seven Roasters, whose brew is so potently, pleasingly strong it makes Stumptown taste like Sanka. From my companion, a connoisseur, I heard the apple juice was excellent, with crisp, tart notes and just the right body for making straw bubbles.

Hungover, Hooked-Up or Hanging with the Family: Fairly brightly lit for the hung-over, the greasy goodness of the food makes it worth dining in shades. There is counter space and fast wi-fi for solo dining. The house music was what seemed to be an 'AC/DC' Pandora-type station playing at a reasonable level. This is the spot to bring a hook-up you're feeling out as a potential breeding partner, as you will be exposed to other (generally cool) people's children and their various parenting techniques. The staff is kid-friendly and the booths have space enough to host giant platters of food and a LEGO Star Wars battle. Even though the booths are generous, The Square Knot is on the tiny side - with only a handful of seats - so a weekend table may be a wait.

What's Cooking: The food is here is just plain great. There is no pretensiousness or fancy plating and the price point is astounding. I have never had a Benedict ($8.75, for the classic) so well prepared for under $10. They were generous with the tasty, fresh Hollandaise and there was plenty to slather on the hash browns, which were crisp perfection on their own. The eggs were precisely poached and the ham tasted off-the -bone. For my little guy, I ala-carted a short stack of pancakes and a side of sausage, which turned out to be enough to feed two kids his age.
