The loaded vegan Ichiban Dog--with daikon, carrots, caramelized onions, and vegan cream--is a grand slam for vegetarians taking in the game.
The Eats: The Field Roast Stand, right behind section 133 on the main concourse at Safeco Field.
The Beets: Vegetarian ballpark franks, themed vegetarian franks, and Field Roast veggie burgers (the Field Burger). 100% vegetarian and vegan ballpark dogs and burgers.
The Deets: My oh my, it's a veggie grand salami! For any baseball-loving vegetarian who's been settling for soft pretzels and garlic fries, local grain meat company Field Roast touches all the bases with their newly launched Field Burger and themed franks. Prices range from $6.25 for the classic frank to $6.75 for the Field Burger (Field Roast's newest offering only available at Safeco Field). In between are the specialty dogs at $6.50 a pop, and this is the flavor country vegetarians have been waiting for at the ballpark.
The new specialty dogs and burger are only available from the dedicated Field Roast stand in Section 133, but Field Roast last night served them up free to invited press guests.
The "haute dogs" are saucy and oozing with condiments, but with a few extra napkins folks will get by just fine like the rest of the dog-slurping crowd. The franks used in them are different than Field Roast's rustic sausage line--touting a refined, firm texture with savory onion and garlic--but they're a perfect partner for a soft bun and sloppy fixings.
The Seattle Chili Dog, a vegan concoction topped with loads of vegan chili and "cheez" was sloppy indeed, but it was tasty--not too spicy, but full of thick, beany sauce and a palatable vegan cheez. It's a hearty, finger-licking experience certain to weave vegetarians into Mellencamp's "sucking on a chili dog" vision of Americana (I lost count at five napkins, and now have a renewed appreciation for the song).
The Bombay, served with stewed chickpeas, coconut cream, and fried curry leaves was an aromatic, ethnic treat anchored by the flavorful frank. But it's the IchiBan that takes the win. Ichiro is still the darling of the Mariners and likewise his namesake vegan dog is too: smothered in teriyaki glazed onions, grated daikon and carrot, shredded nori, and a drizzle of vegan cream sauce, the Ichiban is a delicious and exotic game day delicacy.
The Decree: No more scrounging for dinner at Safeco Field, veggies! Field Roast at Safeco Field is a Beet Street home run.
