March Madness starts tomorrow, and Sport Restaurant and Bar is making sure fans of all 68 participating teams can color their celebrations appropriately supportive.
The bar has already created team color shots for the schools whose alumni groups hold viewing parties at Sport, and general manager Eric Howie says his bartenders are ready to construct other shots on request.
For Michigan (my request), Howie says he'd use "fresh lemon sour and pineapple for the yellow, Malibu coconut rum for the liquor, and Blue Curacao liqueur for the blue." He describes the shot as "smooth and crisp" -- just like Michigan's ball-handling (my opinion) -- and says bartenders strive not to prioritize the palette above the palate.
"We're making sure it's easy to like for everyone," he says. "Not too strong or too sweet."
Red and blue are the most versatile colors, Howie says, but he approximated something like purple with mandarin vodka, parfait amour and citrus juice for his Husky shot. He's pleased that he won't have to develop a shot for Oregon fans.
"Once you start getting into yellow or green, it definitely becomes a little more challenging for the bartender," he says.
