The Hours: Drink specials from 4pm to 6pm & 10pm to Midnight. Food specials run 4pm to 6pm daily and 10pm to Midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Digs: For those whose misspent youth saw them often stumbling down streets Pike and Pine, Phinney's El Chupacabra serves as a Cha Cha Lounge for grown-ups. Thatched grass, hanging skeletons and red lighting make for a total "Mexi-hole-in-the-wall" vibe, while the staff and jukebox are rocking enough to let you forget-- at least for your visit-- there is a Stroller parked on the porch of your picket-fenced Craftsman down the street.
The Deal: $1 off well drinks and draft beers will give you cause to order that second or third cocktail, while the food specials could be called mini-meals, as they are just smaller portions of Chup favorites. $5.99 gets you two tacos served with rice and whole beans. Taquitos topped with guacamole and sour cream are $3.50, and jalapeno poppers (7 in an order) can be had for $5.50.
The Verdict: Before heading to the El Chup, be warned: On a nice day, the sunny outdoor porch fills up quickly and weekend happy hour will have you hunting for a seat in a packed house. A mellow weeknight is the best time to take this place in. One of the few bars that caters to the rock and roll crowd in Phin-wood, you'll find a cool mix of rockers mingling with their fleece-clad neighbors taking advantage of the bargain food and drink specials. El Chupacabra also goes out of its way to accommodate vegans, vegetarians and the dairy/gluten-free sets, making it a spot where you can meet up with all your friends, digestively challenged or otherwise.
