For President Barack Obama, a trip to Seattle means high-dollar fundraising and a slice of Dahlia Bakery's coconut cream pie.
For a recent Hawaiian vacation contest, Tom Douglas Restaurants asked entrants to answer 20 trivia questions, including "Which US president has had our Triple Coconut Cream Pie three times?" As of lunchtime today, his pie count will stand at four.
Douglas is again catering Obama's lunch, although he's not permitted to reveal details about the location or menu. "I'm a fan," he says of what's becoming a regular gig.
Since Obama doesn't typically stick around for dessert, his favorite Seattle pie is usually hustled into the presidential limousine.
Obama is famously fond of pie. He "has a weakness for pie," senior adviser David Axelrod revealed on a 2010 episode of the Tonight Show. Although he's non-partisan in his pie choices - "By the way, some of you heard that my cholesterol went up? It's because of pie," Obama told a group of Iowa voters after indulging in a slice of rhubarb - he generally prefers sweet potato to coconut cream.
"They did not have sweet potato pie at this particular establishment," Obama said while campaigning in Philadelphia, remembering an Ohio pie stop. "So, instead, I got coconut cream pie. I'll take a cream pie, I don't mind. I like all kinds of pie."
