Egg-free Pumpkin Pie at Jodee's Desserts in Greenlake

Thanksgiving seems like it was weeks ago. Somewhere in the whirlwind of the past days, there was a feast with family, and time spent playing the piano with my three year old niece. Mountains of dishes and dishes of leftovers. Thanksgiving dinner was wonderful, and nary an element made me ill because the cooking was done with extraordinary care. But for me, this year, there was no pie.

One morning, nearer the beginning of November, I woke up craving pumpkin pie. This was out of the ordinary for many reasons, not the least of which is that pumpkin pie is only a recently acquired taste. I used to hate pumpkin pie. Of course, as fate would have it (with typical cruel irony), nearly as soon as I finally acquired a taste for pumpkin pie, I had to give it up. Between the eggs that hold the filling together and the gluten that holds the egg-filled filling, pumpkin pie is definitely out of the question.

It was gleefully that I realized -- it being Fall and all -- that my pumpkin craving might, possibly, if I was lucky, be sated by a visit to Jodee's Desserts in Greenlake.

Jodee's Desserts is a fabulous little store on Woodlawn in Greenlake, serving organic, vegan, and raw items such as pies and cakes. It is, essentially, a pastry shop for those who don't or can't eat pastries. And I timed my visit exactly right: a fresh pumpkin pie was being cut, just as I arrived.

Made with coconut meat, nut butter, sugar-pie pumpkins, and an exceptionally skillful amount of spice, Jodee's pumpkin pie is beautifully designed and extremely tasty. Because it is all raw, it is refrigerated until serving. Between the texture and the cool temperature, it bears many similarities to an ice cream cake. Far more subtle in flavor than a traditional pumpkin pie, with none of the stick-to-your-teeth qualities.

Jodee's desserts are all marvelous. I have yet to try one that I dislike. They are famous for their tiramisu. In the summer, they have one of the best banana cream pies around town, raw or otherwise! And in the fall, they serve an allergy-edible pumpkin pie.

If you haven't checked it out yet, it is an absolute must for allergics, vegans, and raw-foodies alike. It is also an excellent destination for those with "normal" diets as well; you can't really go wrong at Jodee's.

But whatever else you do, make sure that you take a friend with you when you go; the intensely rich raw-food creations will likely make it impossible to stop eating, but also make you feel like you've attempted to eat an entire traditional pie by yourself if you don't have a friend along to help you out!

Jodee's Desserts is located at 7214 Woodlawn Avenue NE, and is open every day from 11:00 am - 7:00 pm.
