See Sound Lounge: Beyond the Fish Tank, Haughty Facades Fade and Dignity Is Danced Away

The Place: See Sound Lounge, 115 Blanchard St., 736-5009, BELLTOWN

The Hours: Wednesday-Sunday, 9-10:30 p.m., with additional specials Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday nights.

The Deal: The drink specials vary on different days and foreshadow the night ahead. Wednesday through Sunday, a foundation is set with $3 Heinekens, $4 blueberry lemonade vodkas, and $5 vodka & Red Bulls. Wednesday--the best hook-up night, according to The New York Times--becomes extra saucy with $3 specials on lemon drops and Crown Royal/ Hennessys from 10-11. On Thursdays, $3 cosmos, lemon drops, and kamikaze shots ring in the weekend early, and Sunday's $3 Sol beers allow time to sip and relax while reminiscing about the crazy weekend (that started with the Wednesday night hook-up).

The Digs: What kind of lounge has minimal seating aside from cushy leather couches reserved for VIP's who purchase table service? The kind of lounge that's actually a club. With blue and magenta lighting, two DJ's, and seating that comes with a price, See Sound is designed for people to be on their feet, however unsteadily.

The bartenders in the main room have a hipster-turned-professional air, but friendlier. They'll grab a beer for the young professional in a pinstriped suit, then recommend the blueberry vodka special to the blonde teetering in five-inch heels on his arm. Want to see what happens when Belltown 20- and 30-somethings let their hair down and think nobody is watching? Venture past the fish tank and enter the back room to witness a mass of people grinding, schmoozing, and fist-pumping to Rhianna and "Shots" by LMFAO. If you ever fantasized about attending an underwater high-school dance in the rich suburbs of Malibu, this isn't a bad substitute.

The Verdict: See Sound Lounge calls itself a lounge, but is really the club of Belltown. Like the clientele, once you get past the haughty exterior, it's all good times inside. The happy hour may not include any food, but who orders food at a club? The $4 blueberry vodkas are delicious, and lend themselves to multiple orders for the price, which doubles after 10:30. Come relatively early to take advantage of the drink specials, but bring a friend to chat with, since the place doesn't start to get packed until around 11.
