Food Network Hits Up Seattle Bakeries for Pie-Making Tips

Pie is readying for its star turn this afternoon, when a Food Network crew will descend upon the Fremont bake shop to capture hours of pie-making footage.

Pie is one of two Seattle bakeries slated for inclusion in the Food Network's upcoming pie special: West Seattle's Shoofly Pie Company will also be featured, along with pie bakeries in Chicago and San Francisco. Pie's owner Jess Whitsitt has heard the one-off show will be "airing quite a few times," starting this fall.

Whitsitt says the Food Network staffer who contacted her didn't offer too many details about the show, so her friends have been speculating about a potential celebrity host.

"Everybody keeps saying it's going to be a throwdown with Bobby Flay," she says. "I don't believe it, but you never know. I say, bring it."

The Food Network will be filming ambience shots, so Whitsitt's invited customers who aren't camera-shy to crowd her shop from 4 to 5:30 p.m. She'll also be creating two pies for the show: a sweet cherry lime meringue pie and a savory peppered steak.

Neither pie is on her regular menu.

"They ask for recipes, and there are certain ones I'm willing to give out and certain ones I'm not," she says.

While the crew's presence is likely to make for a chaotic afternoon, Whitsitt's determined to stick to regular hours today.

"We're looking forward to it," she says.
