Kim Ricketts: A Remembrance

The world is a suckier place today because Kim Ricketts is no longer in it.

Kim was the amazing force behind a company that put books in the hands of people and got them pumped up about reading. Her wildly popular Wine & Words, along with the Cooks and Books events, brought the biggest stars in the food world into close contact with folks who are absolutely passionate about all things edible. She was always stirring the pot, making wonderful things happen.

She was on a first-name basis with Mario (Batali), Tony (Bourdain), and, one of her favorites, Michael (Pollan). She partied with David Chang and supped an elegant retro meal created to celebrate a book on the history of New York City's restaurants. She was so incredibly good at what she did, and her passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of so many.

While Kim had a long list of professional accomplishments, I don't think I'm going out on a limb in saying she was most proud of being mom to Sam, Whitney, and Hannah, wife to her college sweetheart, Mike, sister to Deb and Bob and friend to hundreds who adored her. The loving tributes started appearing on her Facebook page shortly after Monday's terrible news that Kim had lost her battle with cancer.

The shock at the news was understandable because everyone who knew her believed she had the strength to carry on. She stayed upbeat in her reports on Facebook, assuring everyone that she would soon be home and was looking forward to visits.

This is truly one of those moments when you want to shake your fist at the sky and scream "It's not fair!" She still had so much to contribute. She will be mourned and missed. But even through the tears, I'm thinking of Kim's infectious laughter and her adventurous spirit. Rest in peace.
