Getting a Tasty Preview of Little Water Cantina

Ensalada Fresca was a promising sign of good things to come at Little Water Cantina.
There's going to be a party going on all summer long off Eastlake at the new Little Water Cantina. As first reported by the Eastlake Ave. blog last June, this restaurant will occupy retail space in one of the many condos in that 'hood, but also have an outdoor space with a view of Lake Union. (The "Little Water" to Lake Washington's "Big Water"?)

The sous chef is Cameo McRoberts, an Alaskan native who most recently worked for Kathy Casey, but has also spent time in the kitchens of Mexican food superstar Rick Bayless.

I got to try Cameo's food last week during a benefit dinner for North Helpline, a four-course feast served pop-up restaurant-style at The Breakfast Club in Lake City. (Have you had that diner's Bennies? Because they're out of this world!)

Cameo McRoberts' Cochinita Pibil was pork-tastic.
The Yucatan-inspired dinner started with some addictive stuff called Sikil Pak, a pumpkin-seed dip that's a long-lost cousin of hummus. That was followed by a refreshing and very pretty cucumber, jicama, and melon salad dressed in a tequila-spiked lime vinaigrette. Bueno!

The main course was a gorgeous chunk of pork, slow-braised with achiote paste and served with a wicked-hot habanero salsa and pickled onions. Dessert was a tres leches cake.

It was a really nice introduction to this generous chef. I'm really looking forward to eating more of her food in the near future at Little Water Cantina. Target opening date: May 5, Cinco de Mayo!
