The Place: The Athenian Inn, 1517 Pike Place, 624-7166, athenianinn.com.

    The Hours: 4-7:30 p.m.

The Deal: $2.50 frosty mugs of domestic draft beer (typically Busch or Budweiser), $3 wells, $3.99 appetizers (including fish & chips and elk sliders).

The Digs: Business (diner) in front, party (bar) in back with cheap fare and a bazillion-dollar view of Elliott Bay, this 102-year-old holder of one of the city's first post-Prohibition liquor licenses is as Old Seattle as it gets--Ould with a "u" when considered in tandem with its equally salty Pike Place Market neighbor, Lowell's.

The bar, which attracts a small and genial crew of scruffy regulars, closes early (8 or 9, depending on the season), but the happy hours are long, and the $3.99 fish & chips is plenty to make a modest meal out of. At that price, you'd expect the runts of the run; but this being Pike Place Market, with its multitude of fish vendors, it's instead a very fresh little basket.

There are $3 wells, but drinking anything other than beer feels weird at the Athenian. Rather, order up a $2.50 frosty mug of Busch or Bud, or choose from a cooler full of shrewdly procured titles such as Sheaf Stout, Old Chub, or Sam Smith's Taddy Porter, previously available for purchase only at Dead concerts.

The Verdict: Seriously, if you whipped out an iPad here, the nearby fish-hurlers would likely escort you out the door and fling you into the Alibi Room in Post Alley below. Factor in a steady stream of Steely Dan on the stereo, and it's a welcome trip back to a Seattle where the Mariners still had tridents on their hats and tattoos signaled a recent tour of Vietnam.
