UPDATE: Bacon Kevin Bacon Takes Over the World

Kevin Bacon, made in the one true medium
I know that you have all been watching, with hungry fixity, the saga of the "Bacon Kevin Bacon"--the sculpture of the head of Kevin Bacon, made entirely out of bacon bits by artist Mike Lahue.

I know that some of you have considered purchasing said work of art (the proceeds go to Ashley's Team--an organization that helps kids with cancer). I know that some of you have probably thought about eating said work of art (probably not a good idea, considering the amount of lacquer that Lahue had to use to keep all that bacon from falling off). And I also have noticed that the tale of Bacon Kevin Bacon has pretty much taken over the world, with mentions of it popping up everywhere from a FOX affiliate in Philadelphia, a news station in New York, Wired magazine and the USA Today.

So with all this attention, can you guess how much the BKB is worth right now on Ebay?

That's right: $2000! And to think, when I first wrote about this, the thing was going for a paltry $348...

Oh, but wait. Here's another bit of strangeness I failed to notice during the first rush of the original story. Both the artist, Mike Lahue, and the folks who commissioned the bacon bust (Justin Esch and Dave Lefkow, owners of J&D Foods which is the company behind such products as Bacon Salt, Baconnaise and BaconLube) are all based out of Seattle. Lahue and his friends even have a "making of" post on their bacon-centric arts-and-crafts blog, whatdobacondo.com.

So check it out, won't you? And if you have the means, why not give a second look to the sculpture itself. A few days ago, it was just a pretty funny idea. But now, for just $2025 (it's jumped since I started writing this) you can own a bacony pop-cultural phenomenon, and help out a lot of kids in the process.

Oh, and here's a video all about the BKB, courtesy of E! News.
