I didn't get to sample much local food on Lopez Island this weekend as we were there for less than 24 hours to cook for the loveliest group. I didn't have time for anything, though I nearly drop kicked the world's most annoying bed & breakfast hostess. Oh, let me count the ways (the first clue being: bed & breakfast).
In fact, I went all the way to Lopez and all I got was a sprouted corn hippie tostada (inexplicably made with Dubliner cheese by a young boy and an old hippie who sounded exactly like The Dude) and a Holly B's cinnamon roll. The later was worth at least half the $50 ferry ride and made my goddamn morning. Don't get me wrong, I love the mille feuille of a nice croissant, but sometimes you just want a comforting classic, like a lemon bar, or something fun like cream puff coffeecake.
It takes quite a pinwheel of dough, cinnamon and slivered almonds to love a cinnamon roll without frosting, but Holly will ask you whether you like a middle or and end, and offer a coveted corner piece. She also makes a mean shortbread and impressive assortment of breads and brioche-based pastry. (Holly B's Bakery, Lopez Plaza, Lopez Island)
