How is it that at 12:45pm today the Fremont outpost of Paseo had no line? All you had to do was head down to Homegrown Sandwiches (3416 Fremont Ave. N.). Out of the black cod and grilled portabello sandwiches when I got there, I went reuben and I'm better for it. The sandwich had thick slices of pastrami and kraut, sassed up by Beecher's flagship and mostarda and made me wish I could stay and enjoy it with an Aspall cider (beer & wine available). Ben Friedman and Brad Gillis were manning the front, as well as sweeping the dining room and emptying the bus tubs.
"We've had a line out the door since we opened. It's been crazy and there's been a few bumps and snafus, but everyone's been so excited that we can't complain" said Ben. No need to start a sammie war. There are plenty of hungry people to spare in the Center of the Universe on any given afternoon, and Homegrown creates a viable, responsible $10 lunch option. Consider this zone the new sandwich triangle, along with Paseo and Baguette Box, all tasty in their own way. Lunch is definitely Fremont's meal of the day.
