$3.95 is the new magic number for Starbucks, which has recently suffered layoffs and disappointing sales. So in a new company press release, SBUX announces that it'll offer $3.95 combos of, say, a latte and cookie, or tall drip and sandwich. Facing cheaper competition (with improving coffee) at McDonald's, the move makes sense in our current hard times. But you know what would make more sense? Even-increment pricing for cash customers: $4.00, tax included, for those who pay in cash rather than holding up the line to add precious miles to their airline-sponsored credit cards. Even those of us who are counting our pennies get sick of counting our pennies.
