Curio Confections will enter the Seattle dessert scene next month, just a few blocks north of the home of the University District farmers market on University Avenue...
Local baker Maria Friedman just returned from New Zealand, where she worked on a farm and helped that family's daughter set up a bakery. Maria also apprenticed in the Swiss Bliss chocolate factory while on the isle, where she would have become their chocolatier had she not returned home to open her own place.
Serving quiche, savory pot pies, crisps, shortbread, cookies, and straight-up old school pie, Curio Confections will offer a wide variety of baked goods, along with chocolates and eventually homemade candies. But it's all about the pie. Maria says, "I'm looking to go fresh and seasonal, both home-y and adventurous. I'd love to help people see their wildest pie dreams come true, I'm always in search of a new flavor combination and will totally try to make any kind of pie someone asks for." Maria will also make chocolates and hopes to offer homemade marshmallows and candies.
Look for Curio Confections to open sometime mid-March, right across from the University Theater at 5509 University Avenue. The shop will be open mid morning until 10:00pm and will carry a selection of beer and wine for those wanting to make the spot their date night.
(Disclaimer: Big giant heart on my sleeve here, I've had the joy of working with Maria and partaking in her various adventures in all things with a crust. I plan on being first in line the day she opens.)
