Don't understand sprays, Lysol, or Airwick. When you want your pad to smell nice (or erase the stench of a carbonized pot, eh hem, oops), just throw something in the oven. (Roasted fennel) = One of those things that seems like a luxury only fit for the restaurant table, but is actually stupid easy.
Use a 9"x9" glass pan or high-sided, small cookie sheet to ensure the least amount of wasted space. Lay out a fennel bulb which has been sliced lengthwise into 6 or 8 pieces. (1/4-1/3 inch thick). Add four to however-many-you-want cloves of garlic. Drizzle enough olive oil over everything to make a puddle in the bottom of the pan. Crack the pepper, sprinkle with good salt and roast in a 375-400 degree oven for 30 minutes, flipping once half way through.
Bonus: Used the soft garlic cloves however you want. Let the oil in the pan cool and store it in an old jar or bottle; it makes a great salad dressing, dip for bread, or drizzle for other roasted veggies, like beets.
