I'm not going to show you too much of the new Oddfellows Cafe & Bar, and I'm not going to pretend to be objective about it either. I mean, it's Linda Derschang and Ericka Burke (chef and co-owner of Volunteer Park Cafe), and it's in my neighborhood. But I really was so impressed that the place was still being tidied for the preview last night and yet looked comfortable and lived in, with that certain design ease all of Linda's places possess.
So I'll give you my 30-second first impression and you can go check it out for yourself:
Original doorway and vintage detailing, nice... Appropriate distribution of found objects... Lots of outlets (goes well with free wi-fi)... Giant photo of the original Oddfellows, found in the basement... Thick shellacked wood tables, stunning... Hey, Choward's violet chicklets... Strega!... French Dip on the menu!!... Pickle butter? okay... I can't imagine how long it took to find all of those drafting chairs... ooh, church pews... and the sweetest little patio in Seattle now that they've gone and ruined the building at 2nd & Battery.
This particular part of the Oddfellows Hall building used to be the fellows' dining hall. Appropriate. The decor? I'd call it modern-rugged meets draftsman's commisary circa 1918. Menu highlights:
Mascarpone & pear brioche French toast ... $8
Latte, juice, and baguette ... $6
French Dip ... $8
Rillettes and crostini ... $8
Cheese plate ... $10
Full bar, and beer & wine available to go
