Saturday was Mead Day. I was going to write about it, except I couldn’t find any mead at the five stores I tried. Sure, I could have tried harder, but it was too gorgeous outside for fruitless tasks.
Anyways, I became obsessed; so I made some myself. Hard to screw up honey, water, and yeast, but I didn’t have wine yeast. So I used some crazy brewers’ yeast. (I didn’t have the energy to go to Bob’s Brewing Supply, 2821 NE 55th St.) And I didn’t have that great a selection of honey. So I squirted them all in the carboy. Or that much honey, so I added some maple syrup.
(Can you hear the dulcet tones of Dolly Parton’s In The Ghetto yet?)
The funny thing is, I’ve made mead many times, and this batch smells right, and it looks right, and it will be ready--and much needed--just in time for election night. Then I found this site with tons of mead recipes that includes one with maple syrup. Phew, so not crazy after all then.
What was my point? There are some really great recipes on that site, involving some of the beautiful in season fruit you may be spying at the market... If you ever wanted to dabble with nature's greatest chemical reaction, mead is the way to start.
